Collegian nabs several national awards for journalism

In a national competition that draws more than 8,000 entries from the most prestigious journalism schools in the country, Rocky Mountain Collegian journalists recently won four first-place awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

Collegian staffers took the top honors in the 27th Annual Gold Circle Awards for:

sports column writing
news feature reporting
page design
a personality profile

The wins were announced last week.

Additionally, newspaper staffers garnered a second place for news writing, a third place for color photo story and certificates of merit for a news feature, sports photography, photo illustration, photo portfolio, and informational graphic.

Colorado State students among nation's best

"This is one of the most successful years the students have ever had when it comes to winning Gold Circles. Their work, which is judged by some of the nation's best professionals, topped entries from the best colleges in the country. I'm thrilled," Collegian News Adviser Holly Wolcott said this week.

The top finishes included a first place for Brandon Iwamoto, a veteran Collegian photo journalist who won for his detailed, history-filled piece on spending spring break at Manzanar, a one-tme Japanese internment camp in the California desert.

Collegian Editor-in-Chief Virginia Singarayar won top honors for her design of the 2008 Collegian voter guide; and news editor Jim Sojourner claimed the top spot for his profile of a CSU communications worker. CSU graduate Sean Star won for sports column writing.
