'Origins of Agriculture in the Andes of Peru' summer study abroad program

Interested in agriculture, history and Latin American studies? Want to expand your horizons? Apply for a chance to study abroad in the Andes of Peru this summer. Applications are due March 15.

Where will you be this summer?

The Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture is excited to announce the development of a new summer study abroad program aimed specifically at Horticulture students as well as those students with an interest in agriculture, history, and/or Latin American studies.

The Summer 2010 Origins of Agriculture in the Andes of Peru program provides students with a unique opportunity to explore the cultural, agricultural, and geographical diversity of the Andean region of Peru.

As a participant on this program, you will:

• study the origins of crop domestication using the potato as a case study
• explore the diversity of plants and food that are prepared in the Andean highlands
• discover the connection between plants and people in subsistence agricultural communities
• explore the medicinal uses of plants
• participate in demonstrations of unique and ancient agricultural systems

Apply by March 15

The program is based in Lima, Cuzco and Pisac, Peru. In addition to seeing the many cultural and historical sites of interest in these cities and their surroundings, students will also visit the world-renowned archeological and historical sites of the Incan empire – the Sacred Valley of the Incas and Machu Picchu.

All students will register for HORT 382, The Origins of Agriculture in the Andes of Peru (3 credits), taught by Jorge Vivanco, professor of horticulture at CSU.

The program is tentatively scheduled for June 6 – 23, 2010.
