Applications are now being accepted for the alternative fall break trip to New Orleans, Louisiana. This trip offers students the unique opportunity to visit a historic university, work with a community service to help Hurricane Katrina victims, and attend in the Bayou Classic football game.
Southern University and A&M College had its beginning in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1880. Southern University has since established four additional campuses. The Baton Rouge campus is the flagship campus. The Southern University System is the only HBCU system in the nation.
Southern University and A&M College is a comprehensive institution offering four-year, graduate, professional, and doctoral degree programs. It offers bachelor’s degrees in 42 areas, 19 master’s, five doctoral, and two associate degrees.
An average of 8,000 students are enrolled each year at the Baton Rouge campus. Approaching the year 2010, Southern is meeting the needs of a more-than-ever diverse student population.
The St. Bernard Project is an independent, not-for-profit organization that was founded to help families who lost their homes due to Hurricane Katrina attain humane, affordable and sustainable housing. The St. Bernard Project believes that housing is a human right.
The St. Bernard Project is a direct service organization that works in both St. Bernard Parish and Orleans Parish. The St. Bernard Project, with support from over 15,000 volunteers and 5,000 donors, rebuilds and builds homes so that citizens have good, safe places to live.
The State Farm Bayou Classic is the annual college football game between the Grambling State University Tigers and the Southern University Jaguars, first held in 1974 at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, Louisiana. Since 1978 the game has been held the final Saturday in November at the Louisiana Superdome.
A Waterford crystal trophy is awarded to the winning school. It is the best known game and rivalry in historically black college football and is televised in the USA by NBC. The Bayou Classic is the only NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) game to be shown regularly on broadcast television. Both schools typically forgo Division I-AA playoff eligibility to participate in the Bayou Classic.
Of the many festivities held in conjunction with the game, the most well-known and well-attended is the Battle of the Bands, where both schools' marching bands (The Grambling State University Tiger Marching Band, also known as "The World Famed," and the Southern University Marching Band, also known as the Human Jukebox) stage elaborately choreographed performances before the game, at halftime and following the game.
Travel to New Orleans will be completed by air. Students will be leaving via Denver International Airport and arriving in New Orleans International Airport. Students will share rooms in a hotel located nearby the Bayou Classic events. The trip will take place from Monday, Nov. 22 to Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010 (Fall Break 2010).
