'History and Appreciation of Film' summer course

Students looking for interesting courses to take this summer may want to consider SPCM 354, "History and Appreciation of Film." The course will focus on analyzing important films from 1915 to 1993.

Ever wanted to take a film class?

Professor Carl Burgchardt will be teaching SPCM 354, “History and Appreciation of Film,” during the second 4-week summer session, June 14-July 8. The class will take place Monday-Thursday from 5-8:30 p.m.

This class is designed for students who love the movies, but may have little experience doing film criticism. This summer will be one of the last times students may take “History and Appreciation of Film” without a prerequisite.

About the course

SPCM 354 will analyze some of the most important films (and directors), both U.S. and international, from 1915 to 1993. After completing the course, students will have an increased understanding of the debate over the film “canon” and what constitutes “greatness” in cinema.

Class members will also have a deeper appreciation of iconic films that are frequently referenced in television shows such as Family Guy, South Park and The Simpsons.
