AmeriCorps rewards students for community service

The office for Student Leadership, Involvement, and Community Engagement is encouraging students to apply to become a member of the UCAN Serve AmeriCorps program for the spring semester.

Designed for students

AmeriCorps is a national program first developed by President Clinton and revised by the Obama Administration through the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act.

Colorado State University is part of the UCAN Serve AmeriCorps program with Colorado Campus Compact.

This is a part-time education program, designed specifically for college students.

Community service gives back

UCAN Serve is designed to strengthen the campus and community partnership by engaging students in meaningful service. In exchange for valuable campus-community service, AmeriCorps members receive an educational award that can be applied to federal school loans or to finance undergraduate and graduate school or vocational training at an accredited institution. The amount of the award depends on the length of service.

Financial awards

This summer, the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act passed changes to the original program. There is now an option for transferring awards for those ages 55 years of age or older at the time of enrollment. Additionally, members of the program can complete up to four part-time terms of service, rather than two. The financial awards have increased to the following:

• 300 hours of service in a calendar year = $1,132.28 award
• 450 hours of service in a calendar year = $1,415.34 award
• 900 hours of service in two calendar years = $2,675 award

Eligibility

In order to qualify, students must be

• doing unpaid service work in a nonprofit or government agency
• a U.S. citizen or permanent lawful resident
• 17 years of age or older
• enrolled at CSU

Students enrolling in an unpaid internship or practicum at a non-profit or government agency for the spring 2011 semester should consider applying for this program.
