Honor student Kristen RuckmanColorado State University student Kristen Ruckman, a senior microbiology major and honor student, has been selected by the American Society for Microbiology, or ASM, as a 2008 recipient of the ASM Undergraduate Teaching Fellowship award.
This fellowship is aimed at highly motivated and competitive students who are interested in careers as elementary or secondary-school science teachers. Students have the opportunity to create a project to provide instruction in a scientific discipline.
Ruckman performed a microbiological study where she developed hands-on activities and kits for elementary school students. The teachers used these kits in the classroom as Ruckman assessed whether the activities resulted in an improvement in the ability students had in answering questions regarding bacteria.
The American Society for Microbiology is the oldest and largest single biological membership organization with more than 40,000 members worldwide.
