Free cholesterol clinics during American Heart Month

In partnership with the CSU Health Network, the Health District of Northern Larimer County will be offering free cholesterol clinics in February.

February is American Heart Month

Since 1963, Congress has declared February American Heart Month to recognize the nationwide problem of coronary heart disease. According to the Center for Disease Control, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. It is estimated that an American dies every minute from a coronary event.

Free cholesterol clinics

To decrease your risk of heart disease, it is important to know your risk factors and take steps to control them. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that all adults age 20 and older have their cholesterol levels checked at least once every five years.

In partnership with CSU Health Network, the Health District of Northern Larimer County will be offering cholesterol clinics on campus.

Wednesday, February 9
8 a.m.-10:30 a.m.
The Zone at the Lory Student Center

Thursday, February 10
8 a.m.-10:30 a.m.
The Zone at the Lory Student Center

These clinics are free for students and Health District residents who have never received a cholesterol screening from the Health District. All others are $15. (A sliding scale is available, depending on income.)

Appointments are required. Call the Health District at (970) 224-5209 to register.

What to expect at the clinic

A fingerstick test will be used to obtain results for:

• Total cholesterol
• HDL
• LDL
• Triglycerides
• Blood glucose

Within 20 minutes, a registered nurse will: 

• Check blood pressure
• Assess risk for diabetes and heart attack
• Explain the test results
• Provide a follow-up recommendation
• Provide health education materials

Prior to your appointment

A twelve-hour fast is necessary for best results. Medications are permitted if they may be taken without food. Please drink at least 8-16 ounces of water prior to the test. If you have diabetes, please check with your doctor regarding whether or not you should take your medicine or fast for this test.
