SOGHR and graduate students provide scholarship, support

Camp held to expose girls to science

In honor of the contributions to community and science, the Black American West Museum of Denver hosted a two-day girls summer science camp on Aug. 5 and 6.

The purpose of this camp was to expose students between the ages of eight and 12 with little or no exposure to the scientific field. Most of the participants have the knowledge of science from public school settings, which may include less than 10 hours per semester. With the goal of deepening student understanding of science and the possibilities and opportunities of learning more about science, the camp aims to inspire students to embrace the importance of learning about math and science, how the two fields are related, and the varying careers offered in each field.

SOGHR reaches out, offers scholarships

The Fort Collins based Society of Global Health Researchers in Action, founded by CSU graduate student Phoenix Mourning-Star, has joined the museum's efforts.

Mourning-Star's efforts have been focused on building a stronger interest in math and science among girls through sponsoring two scholarships that cover the cost of lunch and camp attendance. “I really believe there is so much to be gained from increasing diversity in the science. World-wide, the knowledge and experiences of women in science has been suppressed to great detriment to us all,” said Mourning-Star.

In further effort to support this year’s science camp, SOGHR and Mourning-Star reached out to some of CSU's brightest and most promising science graduate students through CSU’s Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate fellows Michelle Sanchez, Isela Howlett and Katrina Gillette who are contributing their expertise and enthusiasm for education and science.

AGEP is a National Science Foundation program that is administered through CSU’s graduate school to promote science education and support graduate students in the sciences in preparation for the professoriate.
