Volunteers needed for study of high altitude medications

Poudre Valley Health System and researchers at Colorado State University are seeking volunteers to participate in a study investigating the safety of medications used to prevent sickness at high altitude.

Poudre Valley Health System, in conjunction with researchers at Colorado State University, is seeking volunteers to participate in a study investigating the safety of medications used to prevent sickness at high altitude.

The drugs being used in this study are already both approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in patients with lung problems (Aminophylline) and eye problems (Methazolamide).

Elements of the study

Participation will involve:

• a screening and consenting visit
• a six night/six day stay at Medical Center of the Rockies
• physical exams
• blood tests
• consumption of Aminophylline
• consumption of Methazolamide 
• consumption of a combination of Aminophylline and Methazolamide

A final examination for the study will be conducted three to seven days after the overnight stay at the hospital.

Eligibility

Volunteers must be aged 18-40 years, non-smokers, weigh at least 150 lbs, and have normal blood pressure. Volunteers can not be on any medications and must be in good health. There are dietary and lifestyle restrictions that must be followed during study participation. Further, volunteers cannot be pregnant or trying to become pregnant.

Benefits to participating

Benefits for study volunteers will include access to information pertinent to body composition, and metabolic and cardiovascular risk. For example, study volunteers will be provided with copies of their physical examinations. This study has the potential to identify a combination of medications that will help prevent others from becoming sick at high altitudes. Participants will
also receive financial compensation for time spent in the medical center.
