Colorado State University graduate student Gaurav Madiwale has been awarded first place in the Food Science section of the New York Academy of Sciences's Journey through Science Day.
On Dec. 12, 2011, the New York Academy of Sciences hosted a special Journey through Science Day at The New York Academy of Sciences’ headquarters in New York City. Fifty exceptional students and early career scientists were selected based on research abstracts for this competition.
Gaurav Madiwale from CSU was awarded the first prize in the Food Science section for his poster entitled “Effect of storage and processing on the composition, anticancer properties and sensory attributes of colored-flesh potatoes.”
A master's student in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, Madiwale joined the lab in the fall of 2009. Over the past two years, he has received several awards.
“Gaurav has been a productive candidate and great member of our team,” says Dr. Jairam Vanamala, who heads up the department’s Bioactives and Probiotics for Health Laboratory. “I am very pleased for the recognition he has received for his outstanding work.”
Madiwale received the second prize at the prestigious Mark L. Bieber Research Poster Competition at the Institute of Food Technologists annual meeting, which was held in New Orleans June 10-14, 2011. He was selected as a finalist to present his work as a poster entitled “Effect of post-harvest storage on anti-cancer properties of colored potatoes.” His poster and his research were very well received by judges and visitors alike.
For his work on the USDA National Research Initiative Integrated Project on bioactive compounds in rich color-fleshed potatoes, and his contribution to the field and community, Madiwale was awarded the 2011-2012 Rocky Mountain Institute of Food Technologists Educational Scholarship. RMIFT recognizes talented young adults enrolled in food science and nutrition as well as animal science academic programs with scholarships and travel grants.
Madiwale is currently interning at Kraft Foods in New Jersey and will graduate this spring, after which he will join Clorox as a Food Scientist.
