The CSU Center for Public Deliberation is currently accepting applications for their student associate program.
The Center for Public Deliberation was founded in the summer of 2006, and is “Dedicated to enhancing local democracy through improved public communication and community problem solving.” Working with local city councils, county governments, state representatives, school boards, and community organizations, the CPD organizes and hosts many events in the local community, including public forums on national and local issues and various workshops tied to public participation and civic engagement. Student associates are trained as non-partisan facilitators, process design experts, and conveners, focused on helping the local community come together and address critical issues more effectively.
Students also have the opportunity to gain additional experience in issue analysis, community organizing, meeting design, and report writing to support our work. Overall, the program essentially serves as a very applied internship that provides students with key 21st century skills as well as strong networking opportunities. Students in the program are treated as colleagues and associates with the CPD, not as students merely earning credit. Significant leadership opportunities are available for students that continue with the program beyond the initial year.
CPD student associates typically make a two semester commitment, but a one semester program is available for graduating seniors. They will receive 3 hours of SPCM408 (Applied Deliberative Techniques) credit their first semester and at least one hour of SPCM 486 (Practicum) credit for their second semester (2nd semester students can take more practicum hours if they choose to take on additional responsibilities). Students can also choose to continue earning additional practicum credit subsequent semesters if they are interested. In the Fall 2012, class time will be Tuesdays and/or Thursdays from 3:30 p.m.-4:45 pm.
Applications are due April 6 for full consideration. Extended office hours are being held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and Wednesdays from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. at the CPD office at Eddy 210.
