The graduate assistantship eligibility requirements for the CSU health care contribution toward the cost of graduate student health insurance will change in Fiscal Year 13 and beyond.
Currently graduate assistants must be officially admitted as degree seeking students and enrolled in at least six resident instruction credits in order to receive CSU’s contribution toward their student health insurance premium. However, as of fall 2012, though graduate assistants must continue to be admitted as a degree seeking students, they need only enroll in a minimum of five resident instruction credits to receive the health insurance premium. This change brings the resident instruction enrollment requirement in line with state and federal tax requirements for graduate assistants regarding the Student Employee Retirement Plan (SERP) and Medicare. Students who are enrolled in five or more resident instruction credits are not assessed 7.5 percent of their wages for SERP nor are they assessed 1.45 percent of their wages for Medicare.
