Gilman Scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply towards their study abroad program costs, and a limited number of Critical Need Language Scholarships are given each year for a total award of up to $8,000. The full list of Gilman Scholarship recipients for the 2012 summer and fall semester, including students’ home state, university and country of study, is available online.
Julia Helminiak, study abroad coordinator at CSU and scholarship advisor says, “The Gilman Scholarship allows students to have an experience abroad who could not otherwise have afforded one.”
Helminiak helps prepare eligible students for the Gilman Scholarship. “I am available to read student essays and advise them on how to write a competitive application,” she says. Helminiak, along with other CSU staff, has served as a national scholarship panelist for the Gilman Scholarship Program in the past.
Since 2001, the Gilman Scholarship Program has awarded more than 10,000 undergraduate students nationwide with this prestigious award.
