Alternative Summer Break

Summer alternative break applications are now available!

Help out this summer

This summer travel with SLiCE Alternative Breaks and work at the YMCA Outdoor Science School with fifth graders in the beautiful California Redwoods, or save the sea turtles in the Florida Everglades, or come to Fairbanks, Alaska to work on an environmental conservation project, or come to Malibu to work at Camp Heartland with children affected by HIV/AIDS.

About Alternative Break

The Alternative Break program is an immersion experience into different cultural, environmental and socioeconomic communities across the nation. Students provide service in exchange for education about current social and cultural issues facing the host communities.

Past trips have focused on such social/cultural issues as hunger, AIDS/HIV, housing, homelessness, Native American issues, and the environment, education, economic sustainability, and women’s issues.

All of the trips are week long and are occurring at various times over summer break.

Two ways to participate

• As a trip participant.
• As a Site Leader - Alternative Break Site Leaders coordinate trip logistics, site development, participant recruitment, and program planning. Site Leaders commit to a full year with the program, beginning in early fall, and attend a 15 week Site Leader School.

Deadline approaching

Applications are available at the SLiCE Office, located on the main level of the Lory Student Center behind the Information Desk.

Applications are due at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 27, 2009.
